Why Largo Heat Pumps Fail Right When It Finally Gets Cold

Almost every home here runs a heat pump with electric backup — the setting your thermostat calls "emergency" or "auxiliary" heat. That backup kicks on maybe a dozen times a year. So you've got a part that sits idle for eleven months, then gets asked to pull 15,000 watts on the coldest morning of the season. That's a part that fails at the worst possible moment. It's the call we get most every January.

There's a second reason, and it's specific to where you live. Largo sits a few miles off the Gulf, and salt in the air eats outdoor coils, contactors, and fan motors faster than it does inland. We regularly pull corroded parts off coastal units years before they should've gone. If your system is near the water, that's usually the first place we look.

When to Call — Worst First

Some of these mean stop and pick up the phone. Others can wait a day. They're listed in that order.

• No heat at all, or the breaker trips when heating starts. Don't keep flipping it back on — a breaker tripping under load is telling you something. Call.
• Emergency heat won't shut off. Your next power bill will show it. This almost always means the heat pump side isn't doing its job.
• Cool air on heat mode for more than 10 minutes. A short blast of cool air during a defrost cycle is normal. Ten straight minutes is not.
• Ice on the outdoor unit that never clears. A little frost burns off. A solid block of ice doesn't.
• One or two rooms that never warm up. Often airflow or a duct issue, worth checking before it gets worse.
• Grinding, buzzing, or rattling. Usually a motor or a loose component. Cheaper to catch early.

• Under about 8 years old and it's a fixable part? We repair it. That's almost always the cheaper call, and there's no reason to replace a system with plenty of life left.
• Twelve-plus years, corroded from the salt air, and the quote is for a compressor? We'll tell you to put that money toward a new system instead of a repair that won't outlast next summer. We'd rather pass on the repair than sell you the same fix twice.
